2021 Annual Fraud and Waste Hotline Report

Auditor General Tables the 2021 Annual Fraud and Waste Hotline Report

Ottawa – Today, Auditor General Nathalie Gougeon tabled her 2021 Fraud and Waste Hotline report
(FWH). During the year, there were 301 unique reports from employees and the public, up significantly
from 2020’s 204 cases. Two thirds of the reports came from employees.

“In addition to the 301 unique reports, we also received 274 reports which were similar in nature,” said
Mme Gougeon. “This shows us that employees and the public want and trust the Fraud and Waste
Hotline.”

Among the results of the investigations discussed in this report:

  • A total of 302 reports, received in 2021 and previous years, were closed in 2021.
  • 26% of these were substantiated allegations, including:
    • One termination;
    • Three resignations; and
    • Thirteen suspensions without pay.

“The Fraud and Waste Hotline is a valuable tool,” explained Mme Gougeon. “It is a sound management
practice and also serves as a deterrent for employees.”
